SUMMARY:WA Branch Seminar: Beyond the Gavel - Uses and Abuses of Forensic Science
DESCRIPTION:Forensic science can be the key to justice — or the cause of catastrophic miscarriages. From the wrongful conviction of Sally Clark due to flawed statistical evidence to bite mark analysis leading to death row sentences\, history is filled with cases where forensic testimony has shaped legal outcomes\, for better or worse. This talk will explore real medico-legal cases where forensic science has been both an asset and a liability\, offering essential lessons for forensic experts\, lawyers\, and law enforcement. \nJoin us for an insightful seminar from Professor Rodney Peyton OBE\, a distinguished medico-legal expert with decades of experience in personal injury and medical negligence litigation. Professor Peyton is a former military and civilian surgeon and a recognised authority in trauma management. As Head of Education and Examiner Training for the Royal Colleges of Surgeons in the UK\, he has shaped surgical training globally. He has provided expert opinions in over 70\,000 personal injury and 5\,000 medical negligence cases. An Adjunct Professor of Law at ECU\, he examines forensic failures in real cases\, offering critical lessons for forensic experts\, lawyers\, and the justice system. \nTuesday 1st April 2025 | 5.30pm for networking and light refreshments\, presentation beginning at 6pm.

SUMMARY:WA Branch Seminar: Echoes of Fear - The Monsters of Florence and their Legacy
DESCRIPTION:Between 1874 and 1985\, seven couples were brutally murdered around Florence\, Italy. The investigations led to a life sentence for Pietro Pacciani in 1994. However\, the prosecutor did not believe in the solitary serial killer theory\, and reopened the investigations. A few accomplices of Pacciani were in fact convicted\, but when he died under mysterious circumstances\, no further investigations were deemed necessary despite contrary evidence. In this seminar\, Michele Giuttari will summarize the complete history of the investigations\, integrated with first-hand experience. \nMichele Giuttari was born in Sicily and\, after obtaining a law degree\, joined the State Police and worked in Calabria\, Napoli and Firenze investigating the Mafia and other dangerous offenders. As Head of Florence Police between 1995 and 2003\, he re-opened the Monsters of Florence case leading to the identification and ultimate conviction of additional perpetrators. Since 1997\, Michele has been a writer\, gaining international success and winning several literary awards. \nThis is an online only event and\, due to the nature of the content\, is recommended for a professional and academic forensic audience. Discretion is advised for registrants. \nPlease note: the event will consist of a pre-recorded video presentation from Michele Giuttari\, followed by live Q&A with Michele. Registrants will be forwarded a Zoom link prior to the event.

SUMMARY:ANZFSS WA Branch Event: Insights into Multimedia Forensics
DESCRIPTION:With the use of smart phones\, vehicle dashcam\, body-worn cameras\, and the ever-growing CCTV network\, media-based forensics becomes critical evidence for courts. It can offer a record of the actual video and audio of a crime\, with multimedia forensics involving diverse requests from analysing events\, identifying individuals\, recognising objects\, and synchronising device data to create a true timeline for evidence. In this presentation\, Dr Todd Hutchison will share insights to how media-based evidence is being used to analyse\, sequence\, explain\, and solve crimes\, as well as the complexities it presents. \nDr Todd Hutchison is international bestselling business author\, listed in the Who’s Who of Business in Australia\, and a world champion in music when he was a WA Police musician. He resides as an adjunct Associate Professor in the law discipline at Edith Cowan University\, consultant at law firm Balfour Meagher\, a licensed investigator and security officer\, and a Digital Forensic practitioner specialising in multimedia at Digital Forensics Australia. With a background in behavioural analysis and law enforcement\, Todd provides multimedia-based expert witness services on Supreme Court cases across Australia\, mainly for homicide and major crime matters.

DESCRIPTION:In 2023\, Western Australia Police Force launched IRIS\, a graph‑powered intelligence platform that has transformed how officers access\, connect\, and interpret information. Built on Neo4j and unifying more than a billion data points\, IRIS enables rapid exploration of relationships between people\, entities\, locations\, and events; revealing patterns traditional systems simply cannot. This presentation – originally delivered at ANZFSS 2025 and awarded “Best Presentation in Forensic Intelligence & Data Analytics” – will showcase how IRIS is positioning WA Police as a national leader in intelligence capability. This includes critical use cases such as monitoring high‑risk offenders\, identifying and locating priority persons of interest\, and accelerating a wide range of policing investigations. \nLauren Atwood began her career as an andrologist\, with a degree in biomedical science (forensic biology). She spent six years working for IVF Australia before returning to the forensic fold\, conducting research with NSW Police. After six years driving forensic innovation\, Lauren shifted into data analytics with WA Police\, where she now leads the Data Capability and Insights (DCI) Unit. The DCI Unit designs\, builds and manages IRIS\, the graph‑analytics intelligence platform powering investigations across Western Australia. SUMMARY:ANZFSS WA Branch Event - Prehistorical Forensics
DESCRIPTION:Ötzi the Iceman is an individual who lived\, travelled\, and was murdered in the Alps during the European Copper Age about 5300 years ago. The naturally mummified body was recovered in 1991\, with forensic techniques subsequently applied to determine how Ötzi became deceased. In this presentation\, Edda Guareschi will outline the life history\, death and the environment of Ötzi revealed through forensic investigation\, with considerations on the current related research and the ethics of public display of human bodies in museums. \nEdda Guareschi is a MD and the curator of Ötzi the Iceman\, housed at the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology in Bolzano\, in the Italian Alps. Specialised in Forensic Pathology and Legal Medicine with a MSc in Forensic Anthropology and a PhD in Forensic Taphonomy\, Edda has been holding a honorary position at Murdoch University (WA\, Australia) since 2018. Before moving to Australia\, Edda worked as a forensic pathologist and anthropologist for 19 years. Since 2022\, Edda has been collaborating\nwith the Western Australian Museum as a Research Associate\, studying skeletal collections. \nDate & Time: Wedneday 6th May 2026.
