SUMMARY:ANZFSS NSW - Biogeographical Ancestry Prediction in Forensic Investigations with Felicity Poulsen
DESCRIPTION:Felicity is a Research & Development Scientist within the Forensic DNA Unit at the NSW Health Pathology Forensic & Analytical Science Service (FASS) and a part-time PhD candidate at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) Centre for Genomics and Personalised Health. Felicity’s research has focused on emerging DNA analysis technologies and their application to forensic investigations. Felicity’s current work relates to the use of biogeographical ancestry prediction to provide intelligence to investigators in criminal and coronial casework\, which is the topic of her PhD project. \nThe project is a collaboration between FASS and QUT and aims to investigate potential sources of error within BGA prediction workflows and develop a robust methodology for evaluating and comparing the performance of BGA analysis methods. It is anticipated that the findings will help to inform improvements to current methods\, with the aim to provide more accurate\, reliable and actionable BGA predictions for casework. \nIn 2024\, Felicity was awarded the Eric Murray Professional Achiever’s Award which supported a trip to Santiago de Compostela\, Spain to present her work at the 30th Congress of the International Society of Forensic Genetics and visit the University of Santiago de Compostela to meet with leading international researchers on the topic of Forensic BGA prediction. \nFelicity will discuss her PhD work and share how the Eric Murray award has helped support the project and her professional development as an early career researcher. \nDate: 19th February \nTime: 6pm doors will open\, 7pm presentation starts. Zoom broadcast will begin at 7pm. \nLocation: Lancer Barracks\, 2 Smith Street\, Parramatta. Please note\, if you arrive after 7pm you will be unable to enter. \nPrice: Free for members. $10 for non-members.

SUMMARY:ANZFSS Victoria - Unveiling Hidden Truths: A Multidisciplinary Approach to Locating Clandestine Graves
DESCRIPTION:Currently in Australia\, there are at least 2\,600 long-term missing persons. While most people do not go missing under suspicious circumstances\, there are some that are unfortunately the victims of homicide. After the commission of a homicide\, the offender may choose to engage in ‘detection avoidance behaviours’ or\, colloquially put\, getting rid of the evidence\, and one of the ways to do that is to bury their victims. By nature\, clandestine graves are difficult to find and are a key challenge to law enforcement. While there are many techniques available for searching for graves\, this talk will focus on a multidisciplinary approach that combines both technical (remote sensing) and theoretical (geographic profiling) methods. By using a multidisciplinary method\, we are increasing the chances of locating clandestine graves\, and thus the victims themselves\, which can increase the chances of getting a successful prosecution as well as to provide families with the answers that they deserve. \nDr Victoria (Tori) Berezowski is a lecturer of forensic science at Deakin University. She is trained as a forensic anthropologist\, with interest in the intersection between forensic science\, criminology\, and geophysical sciences. Tori’s research focuses on exploring the techniques available for clandestine grave and missing persons searches\, including criminological theory\, remote sensing\, and 3D technologies. \nDate: Wednesday\, 26th February\, 18:00. \nLocation: Victoria Police Forensic Services Centre\, 31 Forensic Drive\, Macleod. \nBookings essential\, members or guests of members. \nhttps://www.trybooking.com/CYTGE

SUMMARY:ANZFSS NSW - Digital Forensics - The war on child exploitation – Operation ARKSTONE with Jennifer Garcia
DESCRIPTION:The ARKSTONE cases have been complex and drawn out due to the sheer number of charges and victims. \nDigital Forensics played a pivotal role in locating critical evidence at numerous premises. One of the major pieces of evidence located was a rack mounted sever concealed in the POI’s garage\, he was an audio engineer and to the average person it wouldn’t of look like much let alone a server containing storage. This server was located at about 330am by a fellow DF examiner and myself after doing 24+ hours of back to back search warrants. On that server there was 1000’s of images and videos of contact offending. The location of this server was what enabled investigators to run a further 10 warrants and still counting. To date more than 50 children have been rescued due to the contribution of Digital Forensics. So far\, every ARKSTONE case before the court has had the POI’s plead guilty due to the sheer amount of evidence Digital Forensics have been able to retrieve from devices. HARDEN (POI) pleaded guilty 179 charges + form 1 rolled up charges with 26 of the charges being life offences each. (25 years/ life offence). RADFORD received similar sentencing\, and last year DOYLE the final POI to be trialled received a sentence of 37 years. \nThis was also the first time that Digital Forensics not only sat in on the interviews with POIs at the search warrants but due to the technical nature of some\, we were conducting the interviews on the POIs. \nFurthermore\, United Kingdom (UK) National Crime Agency (NCA) Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) \, Homeland Security Investigations (HIS) and other overseas law enforcement agencies continue to make arrests from the 146 ARKSTONE referrals from AFP. \nBeginning as a technical officer in Forensics at the Australian Police Force (AFP)\, then moving into the Crime Scene Investigator role\, Jennifer Garcia is now a Team Leader in Digital Forensics Operations and has recently made the move into an innovation and development role for Digital Forensics. Jennifer holds multiple honorary achievements including contributions to saving over 50 children in child protection role. \nDate: 9th April \nTime: 6pm arrival for 6:45pm start \nLocation: ANZAC War Memorial\, Auditorium\, Hyde Park\, 126 Elizabeth Street\, Sydney. Entry is via Elizabeth Street between the fountains \nPrice: Free for members\, $10 for non-members \nNote: Due to the content this presentation is in person only and will not be recorded.

SUMMARY:Fire\, Cigarettes and Alcohol: An Explosive Case Study
DESCRIPTION:On 16 April 2018\, a deliberately lit fire and explosion occurred at a bonded warehouse in Alexandria\, NSW. \nThis prompted a complex investigation and demolition process delayed by council approval. \nForensic analysis revealed that $34 million worth of imported cigarettes had been stolen prior to the fire. \nThe scene showed evidence of arson\, including strategically placed pallets of used tyres and a single petrol-positive sample found in a mastic joint. \nLater testing confirmed could retain ignitable liquid residues for extended periods. \nThe fire was determined to be a calculated act to conceal the theft. \nThe warehouse owner’s insurance claim was denied on the grounds of fraud. \nA Supreme Court civil trial found that the warehouse director was aware of his father’s plan to destroy the building. \nThe father\, who fled to Russia the day after the fire\, died of a heart attack before the trial began. \n  \n  \n \nMark Pellegrino is a Certified Fire Investigator with 14 years of experience in fire and explosion investigation. \nMark has a motor vehicle examination endorsement through the IAAI-CFI (V) and a Senior Associate (CIP) of ANZIIF. \nMark holds a Bachelor of Applied Science in Forensic Investigation\, a Diploma of General Insurance\, a Certificate IV in Building and Construction\, and a Basic Fire Debris Analysis Certificate. \nSince 2010\, Mark has specialised in forensic fire and explosion investigations\, examining over 1\,200 incidents involving structures\, vehicles\, machinery\, and watercraft. \nFirensics – Facts from Ashes

SUMMARY:WA Branch Seminar: Echoes of Fear - The Monsters of Florence and their Legacy
DESCRIPTION:Between 1874 and 1985\, seven couples were brutally murdered around Florence\, Italy. The investigations led to a life sentence for Pietro Pacciani in 1994. However\, the prosecutor did not believe in the solitary serial killer theory\, and reopened the investigations. A few accomplices of Pacciani were in fact convicted\, but when he died under mysterious circumstances\, no further investigations were deemed necessary despite contrary evidence. In this seminar\, Michele Giuttari will summarize the complete history of the investigations\, integrated with first-hand experience. \nMichele Giuttari was born in Sicily and\, after obtaining a law degree\, joined the State Police and worked in Calabria\, Napoli and Firenze investigating the Mafia and other dangerous offenders. As Head of Florence Police between 1995 and 2003\, he re-opened the Monsters of Florence case leading to the identification and ultimate conviction of additional perpetrators. Since 1997\, Michele has been a writer\, gaining international success and winning several literary awards. \nThis is an online only event and\, due to the nature of the content\, is recommended for a professional and academic forensic audience. Discretion is advised for registrants. \nPlease note: the event will consist of a pre-recorded video presentation from Michele Giuttari\, followed by live Q&A with Michele. Registrants will be forwarded a Zoom link prior to the event.

SUMMARY:ANZFSS WA Branch Event: The science of theoretical explosion reconstruction
DESCRIPTION:In September 2022\, a man was killed when he approached what appeared to be a small scrub fire along a bush track in Pinar\, Western Australia. Unbeknown to the victim\, a number of car tyres had been stacked on top of each other and set alight after placing a diving cylinder in the centre of the tyres. The victim was not hit by the bursting cylinder\, but did suffer immediate life terminating injuries. \nThis incident appeared quite simple in concept\, however proved to be significantly more complex than first thought\, requiring the application of scientific principles to support physical evidence. \n\n\n\nOur presenter\, Sgt Clayton (Jack) Bennie APM\, joined the WA Police Forensic in 1983 before moving into the field of forensic crime scene investigation in 1987. He has over 38 years experience in major crime scene investigation as well as explosion investigation including a major forensic role in one of Australia’s most complex car bombings in 2001. He has delivered explosion investigation training in most Australian jurisdictions as well as being requested to assist with training internationally in Indonesia\, Malaysia\, Nepal and Canada\, working with Interpol and the RCMP. \nDate: Thursday 2 October\, 2025 \nTime: 6pm start\, 5.30pm for refreshments and networking \nVenue: Exhibition Space\, Ground Level Building 500\, Curtin University\, Manning Road BENTLEY \nTickets: ANZFSS Members FREE / Non-members $10\, Student non-members $5

SUMMARY:ANZFSS WA Branch Event: Insights into Multimedia Forensics
DESCRIPTION:With the use of smart phones\, vehicle dashcam\, body-worn cameras\, and the ever-growing CCTV network\, media-based forensics becomes critical evidence for courts. It can offer a record of the actual video and audio of a crime\, with multimedia forensics involving diverse requests from analysing events\, identifying individuals\, recognising objects\, and synchronising device data to create a true timeline for evidence. In this presentation\, Dr Todd Hutchison will share insights to how media-based evidence is being used to analyse\, sequence\, explain\, and solve crimes\, as well as the complexities it presents. \nDr Todd Hutchison is international bestselling business author\, listed in the Who’s Who of Business in Australia\, and a world champion in music when he was a WA Police musician. He resides as an adjunct Associate Professor in the law discipline at Edith Cowan University\, consultant at law firm Balfour Meagher\, a licensed investigator and security officer\, and a Digital Forensic practitioner specialising in multimedia at Digital Forensics Australia. With a background in behavioural analysis and law enforcement\, Todd provides multimedia-based expert witness services on Supreme Court cases across Australia\, mainly for homicide and major crime matters.

SUMMARY:Drug Checking/Analysis at NSW Music Festivals
DESCRIPTION:The Illicit Drugs Analysis Unit’s role in Harm Minimisation \nJoin us for our first NSW Branch meeting of 2026 as we explore the critical work of the Illicit Drugs Analysis Unit (IDAU) and its role in the NSW Government’s 12-month drug checking trial at music festivals. \nFollowing the recent NSW Drug Summit\, strong support emerged for the implementation of drug checking services across the state. In response\, NSW has commenced a time-limited trial delivering on-site drug analysis and harm-reduction advice directly to festival attendees. \nOver recent years\, IDAU analysis of drug seizures has revealed increasing complexity in active ingredients\, emerging novel psychoactive substances\, and higher dosages than historically observed. This presentation will examine how drug checking services have been established in the festival environment and how forensic science is supporting public health outcomes in this evolving landscape. \nIDAU analysts — specialists in the examination of illicit drugs and pharmaceuticals — conduct on-site drug checking using: \n\nNear Infrared (NIR) spectroscopy\nFourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy\nChemical class (colour) tests\nDrug-specific test strips\n\nThe purpose of the service is to identify the primary active ingredient(s) present in submitted substances. Results are communicated directly to clients\, alongside tailored harm-reduction advice delivered by experienced peer workers\, supported by clinical leads and IDAU forensic analysts. \nThe trial forms part of a broader collaborative operation at music festivals\, working alongside rapid drug surveillance and early warning systems to maximise public health benefits and reduce drug-related harm. \nThis session offers valuable insight into the intersection of forensic science\, public health policy\, and frontline service delivery. \nImportant Notice for ANZFSS Members\n\nA brief Special General Meeting (SGM) for all ANZFSS members will be held immediately prior to the NSW Branch meeting. \nThe purpose of the SGM is to formally adopt the proposed Rules of Association amendments\, which were supported by members through last year’s online voting process. \nThe SGM will take no more than five minutes. We require member attendance to reach quorum\, so your participation is essential. \nMembers may attend: \n\nIn person at the NSW Branch meeting\, or\nOnline via the Teams link below\n\nMembers attending online may remain connected for the full NSW Branch presentation. \n\nEvent Details\nLocation: Forensic Medicine and Coroners Court Complex\nDate: Thursday 12 March 2026\nArrival: 6:00 pm\nSGM (Members only): 6:45 pm\nPresentation: 7:00 pm\nCost: Free for members | $10 for non-members \nOnline access (Microsoft Teams):\nhttps://teams.microsoft.com/meet/42212945745878?p=fXFtnn6kA7Dq3OPWsR\nMeeting ID: 422 129 457 458 78\nPasscode: QA3Zh9zv \n\n

SUMMARY:ANZFSS WA Branch Event: Breaking Data Silos - The Power of Graph Analytics in Law Enforcement
DESCRIPTION:In 2023\, Western Australia Police Force launched IRIS\, a graph‑powered intelligence platform that has transformed how officers access\, connect\, and interpret information. Built on Neo4j and unifying more than a billion data points\, IRIS enables rapid exploration of relationships between people\, entities\, locations\, and events; revealing patterns traditional systems simply cannot. This presentation – originally delivered at ANZFSS 2025 and awarded “Best Presentation in Forensic Intelligence & Data Analytics” – will showcase how IRIS is positioning WA Police as a national leader in intelligence capability. This includes critical use cases such as monitoring high‑risk offenders\, identifying and locating priority persons of interest\, and accelerating a wide range of policing investigations. \nLauren Atwood began her career as an andrologist\, with a degree in biomedical science (forensic biology). She spent six years working for IVF Australia before returning to the forensic fold\, conducting research with NSW Police. After six years driving forensic innovation\, Lauren shifted into data analytics with WA Police\, where she now leads the Data Capability and Insights (DCI) Unit. The DCI Unit designs\, builds and manages IRIS\, the graph‑analytics intelligence platform powering investigations across Western Australia. Lauren has been an ANZFSS member for nine years\, serving five as Secretary of the NSW Branch committee. \nDate & Time: Tuesday 31 March 2026. Refreshments and networking from 5.30pm\, seminar commencing 6.00pm \nVenue: Exhibition Space\, Ground Floor Building 500\, Curtin University Bentley Campus

SUMMARY:Dr. Kristen Clarke and SSgt Donna MacGregor ANZFSS QLD Branch 2025 Symposium Award Presentations
DESCRIPTION:Please join us in celebrating some of the Qld Branch Symposium Award winners who presented either their research from the recent ANZFSS Symposium. Presentations will begin at 6:30 pm\, followed by nibbles and light refreshments. Please indicate in the booking form whether you intend to attend in person or online\, and advise us of any dietary requirements. \nDr. Kristen Clarke: Water we waiting for? Evaluating a greener\, safer\, more cost-effective strategy for applying 1\,2-indanedione to latent fingermarks on paper \nDeveloping fingermarks on paper-based evidence with 1\,2-indanedione and zinc chloride is a fundamental evidence gathering methodology; however the most widely-used carrier solvents to effect it\, HFE-7100\, will be phased out after 2025\, necessitating new 1\,2-indanedione formulations. While flammable hydrocarbon solvents have been suggested as suitable replacements for HFE-7100\, the compromise to safety makes them unsuitable long-term alternatives. This work opted for a fundamentally different approach; a water-based\, non-flammable xanthan gum gel medium to host 1\,2-indanedione that allowed for detection of natural fingermarks. \nThe optimised xanthan gum hydrogel formulation develops highly fluorescent fingermarks with minimal blurring and demonstrated effectiveness for fingermarks in the tenth natural depletion of a series. From a holistic frugal forensics perspective\, the gel delivery shows promise in terms of major benefits for cost\, safety\, accessibility\, and availability\, and provides further development in this area to deliver a safer\, longer-term alternative to HFE-7100. \nSSgt Donna MacGregor: From police to universities and everyone in between: a multiagency collaborative partnership for the reporting\, management\, and storage of medical (anatomical) teaching skeletons – a Queensland perspective. \nIn Queensland\, when unidentified human remains (UHR) are discovered\, they must be reported to the Police or Coroner. An investigation will then commence to first determine if the UHRs are ancestral Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander remains or a contemporary forensic case. If the remains are contemporary in nature\, then a full investigation will ensue to determine the identification and circumstances of death for this individual. However\, what if the UHRs are neither ancestral remains or a contemporary forensic case but instead a medical (anatomical) teaching skeleton? \nThe reporting of these type of human remains cases to police\, comes about mostly by family members as they clean out the contents of the deceased’s’ office etc and locate a “box of bones”. These teaching skeletons\, mostly sourced from India\, were exported to medical and educational institutes around the globe including Australia. It is estimated that 2.4 million skeletons were exported between 1947 and 1985\, when the practice ceased. \nTeaching skeletons are being reported to police in increasing numbers in recent years\, even though they are not “reportable deaths” by definition. Previously\, lacking other viable options\, teaching skeletons were lodged into local mortuaries thereby entering the Coronial process. This has significantly increased time pressures on forensic officers and investigators within the QPS and members of the Coronial system\, whilst also contributing towards long-term storage issues; the situation was becoming unsustainable. \nIn 2023\, members from the Forensic Services Group commenced working with academic and technical staff at all Queensland universities with accepting schools of anatomy (i.e. able to receive human cadavers). These universities include Griffith University\, Queensland University of Technology\, University of Queensland\, and James Cook University. Working collaboratively\, a universal donation form and new management workflow\, supported by the State Coroner\, has been established that negates the need for lodgement of teaching skeletons at local mortuaries.\nThis presentation will discuss the process for triaging all UHRs in Queensland and the new workflow for managing teaching skeletons.

SUMMARY:SA Branch May 2026 Meeting - Forensic Application of Apple Health Data
DESCRIPTION:The SA Branch of ANZFSS Welcomes Dr Luke Jennings\, Lecturer in Digital Forensics at Flinders University to present a presentation on the Forensic Application of Health Data. \nHealth Data from phones and smart watches is becoming increasingly important in capturing actions\, behaviours and biometric records in real world investigations. Drawing on extensive experience including from a fatal collision that happened in Daylesford (Victoria)\, Luke will show how step counts\, expended energy\, heart rate\, and glucose levels inform investigators and medical examiners. We will also discuss how health data can inform sleep analysis and\, how it can contain detailed information of locations\, timezones and other associated devices – a treasure trove for forensic digital examiners. \nDr Luke Jennings holds a PhD on the Forensic Applications of Apple Health Data\, from the University of Adelaide. Prior to being appointed at Flinders\, Luke has worked as a senior digital forensic scientist at Digital Forensic Sciences Australia Pty Ltd\, working on over 100 cases\, many concerned with health data records.
