SA Branch Awards
Australian and New Zealand Forensic Science Society SA Branch Symposium Awards 2025
Awards are to encourage and facilitate study and travel by members to advance their work in forensic science. Several awards are in memory of those highly respected and loved individuals who have shaped forensic science. Below are the awards and the background to some of these the awards.
These awards are open to current General, Student, Professional and Life members, and typically provide for registration at the forthcoming ANZFSS Symposium.
The same application will be used to assess applicants for Executive and Branch ANZFSS Symposium Awards.
If you have already submitted you application has been forwarded for consideration by the SA Branch Committee. Please indicate status of acceptance of your abstracts to support your application.
Please note, the matter of Symposium award allocation with consideration to diversity and inclusion has been duly raised with the National ANZFSS. In response Section 8. Diversity and Inclusion has been included in the application form. You are not required to respond to these questions. How this data will be used, if it is in fact used, to assist award selection will discussed by the selection committee during the selection process and make known to the membership to ensure transparency and accountability. If you have any concerns, please contact the Executive or your Branch.
Criteria
Applicants must be:
- a General or Professional member of ANZFSS with at least 24 months of continuous membership at the date of the 2025 symposium (12 October 2025), OR
- a Student member of ANZFSS with at least 12 months of continuous membership at the date of the 2025 symposium* (12 October 2025), OR
- a Life member of ANZFSS.
‘Membership criteria’ will be assessed from the ‘DATE OF APPLICATION’ of the member versus the date of acceptance, where applicable. IF appropriate (your acceptance is less than the requirements above) indicate your date of application for membership.
– Criteria include the involvement in the local Branch and the Society, and the merit of the paper or poster to be presented
– PLEASE INDICATE NUMBER OF BRANCH MEETINGS THAT YOU HAVE ATTENDED OVER THE LAST 24 MONTHS
– INDICATE ANY INVOLVEMENT/COMMITTEE MEMBERSHIP/ACTIVITIES/PRESENTATIONS AT THE SA BRANCH OR NATIONAL/INTERNATIONAL CONTRIBUTION TO FORENSIC SCIENCE
– PLEASE INDICATE THE TITLE, AUTHORS AND ACCEPTENCE OF ABSTRACTS.
– Note that awards may be made to a limited number of non-presenters; applicants must make a statement outlining the personal and professional benefits of their attendance at the Symposium within the application form.
– PLEASE CONFIRM THAT YOU ARE CURRENTLY DOMICILED IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA AND INTEND TO BE SO UNTIL THE CONFERENCE DATE
– ALSO INDICATE CURRENT FUNDING OR APPLICATIONS FROM OTHER SOURCES.
Conditions
For successful applicants who have submitted abstract(s) to the Symposium:
- Acceptance of the abstract/s by the Symposium Scientific Committee
- Presentation at the Symposium of the poster/oral presentation as outlined in the application (with acknowledgement of ANZFSS support), and;
- Provide a recorded presentation at a local Branch meeting either prior to, or, subsequent to the Symposium.
- Provide an article for the website/newsletter.
- Funds must be claimed within the same financial year as the conference.
For successful applicants who are not presenting at the Symposium:
- Provide a recorded presentation at a local Branch meeting either prior to, or, subsequent to the Symposium.
- Provide an article for the website/newsletter.
- Funds must be claimed/finalised within the same financial year as the conference.
A merit list of all applications will be created, if a successful applicant cannot for any unforeseen reason attend or they have an alternative means to fund the conference, they would be expected to decline and New South Wales Branch award to allow another applicant to attend the conference.
The applicant is expected to have the support of their organisation to attend the symposium and apply for an award. The commitee understand this is not always possible so early before the conference. If the applicant is successful but later learns that they cant attend the symposium they must notify the branch immediately to allow for another member to attend the symposium.
Applications close 30/05/25, 23:59 ADELAIDE TIME.
Expected outcome will be announced prior to the last day for presenters to register (before 20 June 2025).

SA AWARDS WILL BE FROM THE FOLLOWING OPTIONS:
The allocated funds from SA Branch will be distributed between the following
- SANDY CONGDON AWARDS(FULL)
- ROSS VINING AWARDS (STUDENT)
Covering:
1) REGISTRATION (unless already covered by National or Institutional award)
2) Appropriate contribution towards travel (based on expected economy or discounted fares from Adelaide to Melbourne on dates of conference)
3) Appropriate contribution towards accommodation expenses for dates of conference.
The above will be based on fares and accommodation available and standard SA Government rates of per diem rates for accommodation in Melbourne
IF MORE THAN ONE APPLICANT IN EACH AWARD IS DEAMED TO BE APPROPRIATE FOR AWARD OF THE NAMED SANDY CONGDON OR ROSS VINING AWARDS THEN FUNDS FROM ANZFSS-SA BRANCH AWARDS CAN BE USED FOR MULTIPLE AWARDS.
For example: ANZFSS-SA funds can be used for
1 of each Sandy Congdon and 1 Ross Vining or
2 Sandy Congdon and no Ross Vining or
No Sandy Congdon and 2 Ross Vining or
1 Sandy Congdon and 2 Ross Vining or
2 Sandy Congdon and 2 Ross Vining or
Any other combination depending on merit of applicants.
