Victoria Branch 2025 Symposium Awards Round Two

Awards are made available by the Victoria Branch to encourage and facilitate members to advance their work in forensic science.

Please note, the matter of Symposium award allocation with consideration to diversity and inclusion has been duly raised. In response Section 8. Diversity and Inclusion has been included in the application form. You are not required to respond to these questions. How this data will be used, if it is in fact used, to assist award selection will discussed by the selection committee during the selection process and make known to the membership to ensure transparency and accountability. Criteria

These awards are a special second round of  conference awards made available by the strong branch membership and because the symposium this year is in Melbourne. The awards will be a mix of professional development and presenter awards at the committees discretion and are awarded to facilitate maximum attendance at the conference for Victorians. The awards may include day registrations.

Applicants must be:

  • a Victoria Branch General or Professional member of ANZFSS with at least 24 months of continuous membership at the date of the 2025 symposium (12 October 2025), OR
  • a Victoria Branch Student member of ANZFSS with at least 12 months of continuous membership at the date of the 2025 symposium (12 October 2025), OR
  • a Victoria Branch Life member of ANZFSS.
  • Criteria includes the involvement in the local Branch and the Society, and the merit of the paper or poster to be presented.
  • Professional development applicants must make a statement outlining the personal and professional benefits of their attendance at the Symposium within the application form.
  • In their professional statements applicants may consider, the benefits to themselves both personally and professionally, the benefits to the Victoria Branch, the benefits to the society, the benefits to the symposium, the benefits to their organisation and anything else the applicant thinks is relevant to support their application. Whilst there is no limit on the field length, applicants are advised to keep the application to max one A4 page in length

The committee is looking to give opportunities to members to attend the Melbourne Symposium who in their role wouldn’t typically have an opportunity to travel to an ANZFSS conference interstate and who haven’t been to an ANZFSS conference before, the applicant should include this information in their application.

Applicants are encouraged to include supporting information into their application that they think would help the committee.

Registrations awards will be prioritised in the first instance. Regional Victoria applicants would be expected to cover their travel and accommodation, however should budgets allow and the applicant demonstrates a need, extra assistance may be granted at the committees discretion.

Conditions

For successful applicants who have submitted abstract(s) to the Symposium:

  • Acceptance of the abstract/s by the Symposium Scientific Committee
  • Presentation at the Symposium of the poster/oral presentation as outlined in the application (with acknowledgement of ANZFSS support), and;
  • Provide a recorded presentation at a local Branch meeting either prior to, or, subsequent to the Symposium.
  • Provide an article for the website/newsletter.
  • Funds must be claimed within the same financial year as the conference.

For successful applicants who are not presenting at the Symposium:

  • Provide a recorded presentation at a local Branch meeting either prior to, or, subsequent to the Symposium.
  • Provide an article for the website/newsletter.
  • Funds must be claimed/finalised within the same financial year as the conference.

A merit list of all applications will be created, if a successful applicant cannot for any unforeseen reason attend or they have an alternative means to fund the conference, they would be expected to decline and Victoria Branch award to allow another applicant to attend the conference.

The applicant is expected to have the support of their organisation to attend the symposium and apply for an award. The commitee understand this is not always possible so early before the conference. If the applicant is successful but later learns that they cant attend the symposium they must notify the branch immediately to allow for another member to attend the symposium.

Q: Does having attended a conference before exclude me from applying for an award?
A:
No, attending a conference before does not exclude you from applying or receiving an award. The committee is looking to give opportunities to members to attend the Melbourne Symposium who in their role wouldn’t typically have an opportunity to travel to an ANZFSS conference interstate and who haven’t been to an ANZFSS conference before. The applicant should include any previous conference years attended and indicate any previous assistance provided please in their application. 

Q: I have submitted an executive award but was unsuccessful, do i need to reapply?
A: No, your application will automatically be included in these applications.

Q: I cant login to my membership account, please can you tell me when I became a member?
